She was looking forward to having dinner with her friend. She flew along the highway just slightly above the speed limit when suddenly, as she went around the turn, she discovered that the traffic in her lane had stopped. She braked then realized she would not be able to stop in time. She swerved to another lane only to realize that she was in the path of an oncoming vehicle. She swung in the other direction and at that point lost control. She only had time to say one word: Jesus. That was it. The vehicle came to a safe stop at the side of the highway.
Others have had this experience of being in a tight spot and the only word they could get out is Jesus. Jesus. It is in the name of Jesus that we pray.
The apostles always pointed to Jesus. When Peter healed the crippled man, he did it in the name of Jesus (Acts 3:6–7). More than once, Jesus said to pray in his name. Here is one such instance: “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it” (John 14:13–14). Now don’t get all giddy and go out and ask for crazy things that do not bring glory to God. It is about God.
Pray in the name of Jesus. That’s what we do. Yet, there are times when we are in such a pressure situation that we can’t think. Yes, the Holy Spirit aids our prayers, but what happens when there’s pressure and everything is happening in what seems to be a flash? There is one word that will make the difference—Jesus. It’s a prayer.
Thus, the name of Jesus is not only for when all is going well and you have time for full prayers that end in the name of Jesus. It is for all seasons, even when the pressure is on and you can say only one word—Jesus.
