Preparing for Eternity

Preparing for EternityDo you ever think about eternity? If you do, do you experience longing, joy, a sense of relief that you’ll be with God forever? Or, do you experience fear?

As we conclude our September series on preparedness, here are the verses I shared in the first post:

But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour (Matthew 24:43–44).

Jesus said this in the context of his return. This brings us to eternity.

Dear Lord,
we are limited—
limited
by what we see-hear-touch
and so we’re stuck—
stuck by-in
what’s around us.
We fail to see you,
your glory
and eternity.

We fill eternity
with what we see-hear-touch;
not you.

Deliver us, we ask,
from the
tyranny of here.

Activate our
spiritual imagination.
Open our spiritual eyes
to see-hear-touch
you and eternity
and in so doing
become unstuck and
see ourselves in the
light of you and eternity.
Then we will
purify ourselves.

Yes, Lord.
Teach us, help us
to prepare for eternity.

What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure (1 John 2:2b-3).
