Jenny was scared. Gone was the confidence with which she had started the journey. Now, she wasn’t even sure that she could make it. Her confidence factor was at an all time low. You see, Jenny had begun with great confidence. She had a wonderful guide whom she respected and trusted. However, she had lost sight of her guide. That was a problem because she was unfamiliar with the terrain in which she was traveling.
Why had Jenny lost sight of her guide? Along the journey, she had gotten busy, picking fruit along the way, filling her basket. She had paused to fill her basket without reference to her guide to find out whether or not these were the only opportunities to pick fruit, or if it was even the right fruit. In addition, there were people who needed her help. Jenny had stopped to help them without checking in with her guide, without getting support from her guide.
Now, nothing that Jenny had done was bad. As a matter of fact, a lot of it was good. The only problem was that now it had gotten dark and she no longer knew her way without her guide. Yes. Jenny’s confidence factor was greatly diminished.
Where Is Your Guide?
Are you like Jenny? Did you start off well? Were you following God, enjoying a close relationship with God, hearing God’s voice and living with confidence? What about now? Is your confidence factor still up or has it gone dark on you.
Maybe it got dark on you because the demands of your job or other responsibilities were so many that you no longer referenced God. It may be that you kept taking on duties never realizing that you were no longer in step with God. Perhaps, your family needed your help and somewhere in the midst of it all of you suddenly raised your head and realized that it was dark.
You can no longer see or sense God in your life. Prayer is absent or unfulfilling. You no longer have a sense of God’s direction and your confidence level is way down. You feel disconnected from God, as if your relationship with God has tanked. You’re floundering. Secretly, you’re scared, scared of not holding it all together.
Rebuilding Your Confidence Factor
There is good news for you. You don’t have to flounder. You can live with confidence. God, your guide is still present. Remember what God says: “ “I will never leave you or forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5b). What does that mean? It means that God is still with you. Thus, the writer continues with this response to God’s abiding presence:
So we can say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper;
I will not be afraid.
What can anyone do to me” (Hebrews 13:6)?
